How Facial Implants are Performed
Chin and Jaw Implants
Chin implant surgery usually takes between 30 to 60 minutes. Your surgeon will make a small incision to create a pocket inside the mouth (along the lower lip) or in the skin just under the chin area, then insert the proper size and shape implant. After surgery, the chin is taped to minimize swelling and discomfort. Sutures in the skin will be removed in five to seven days. If an intra-oral incision is used, the sutures will dissolve.
Insertion of a jaw implant usually takes about one to two hours. Internal incisions are made on either side of the lower lip to create a pocket into which the lower jaw implant can be inserted. Dissolving sutures are used to close the incisions.
Cheek implant surgery usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Your surgeon will make a small incision to create a pocket inside your upper lip or your lower eyelid, then insert the proper size and shape implant. A dressing is applied, and sutures will be removed within five to seven days.
If facial implants are being placed in conjunction with another cosmetic procedure, such as a facelift, forehead lift or eyelid surgery, necklift or facial liposuction, the implants may be inserted through the incisions made for those procedures.
While you are healing, your activities and diet will be restricted. Within a few days after facial implant surgery most people can resume most of their regular activities, with the exception of any activities such as contact sports, games played with a ball, or activities requiring a helmet or chin-strap or could result in a fall or impact to the face should be avoided for three or four weeks.
